GENERAL PURPOSE
Press brake operators produce parts and tools from metal using a press brake, a computer numeric controlled (CNC) piece of equipment that makes precision bends, punches, or cuts into material.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Operate press break machine.
  • Run bend and forming operations using standard and custom punches.
  • Use a CNC controller to input information into machine.
  • Adjust ram and back gauge locations per process control instructions and blueprints.
  • Checks height, depth and thickness using micrometers, dial indicators, calipers, gauges and other precision-measuring instruments.
  • Perform complex programming using all features of the press brake.
  • Work with tight tolerances.
  • Produce parts for assembly operations.
  • Meet customer specifications and delivery requirements.
  • Program the CNC to produce new parts meeting specifications.
  • Perform spot inspections of parts.
  • Perform all required routine and minor maintenance activities according to procedures.
  • Complete and maintain paperwork.
  • Identify assembly parts.
  • Set up light gauge metal.
  • Configure bend allowances for sheet metal (stainless, aluminum & regular steel).
  • Check machine for defects and repair if necessary.
  • Ensure machine is calibrated and cleaned.
  • Read drawings and blueprints.

 

DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:
Graduation from high school or GED equivalent, two (2) years relevant operator experience or operator certification or any equivalent combination of education and experience that demonstrates the ability to do the job.

Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

         Aptitude for math.

         Proble m solving skills.

         Communicate effectively.

         Work independently.

         Perform heavy manual tasks under varying weather conditions.

         Ability to make independent judgments which have moderate impacts on the organization.

         Math Skills: Good math skills will help press brake operators understand complex instructions, how schematics work and make sure items are designed and built correctly.

         Problem Solving Skills: Press brake operators will need to know why machines are not at peak performance, how to increase output and how to fix errors.

         Attention to Detail: Press brakes are precision equipment. Being off by millimeters could be a critical error. Keen attention to detail is required.

         Mechanical and Technical Skills: Machines controlled by computers will need operators who understand CAD/CAM technology.

         Stamina: Press brake operators often work long hours doing repetitive movements

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, talk and hear. The employee is constantly required to use hands and fingers; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, and crouch.

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT

While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently works in warehouse weather conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet while in the office, or moderately loud when in the warehouse.
